Over the last decade, the age-standardised suicide rate for males increased from 16.2 deaths per 100,000 population in 2011 to 18.2 in 2021.Caution is advised when making year to year comparisons. Please note: small numbers can result in large yearly variation in suicide rates. It is important to note that deaths registered in 20 are preliminary and as such, are subject to revision (see below). In 2021, the rate was 12.0 deaths per 100,000 population – down from a post-2006 high of 13.2 in 2017. After 2006, suicide rates began to rise, partly due to improvements in data quality and capture (see below).This was followed by sustained declines over the early 2000s, with a low of 10.2 per 100,000 population in 2006. Rates began to rise in 1985 and fluctuated from 14.3 in 1987 to 11.9 in 1993 with a recent peak of 14.8 in 1997.Rates remained high throughout the 1960s while the 1970s and early 1980s saw a decline in rates (from 15.4 deaths per 100,000 population in 1971 to 11.6 in 1984). Rates tended to increase throughout the 1950s, peaking at 18.4 deaths per 100,000 population in 1963.Rates then declined throughout the 1930s and early 1940s, reaching a low of 8.4 deaths per 100,000 population in 19 (however, suicide rates for the war years may have been underestimated, see Impact of social and economic events.Rates then fluctuated throughout the late 1910s and early 1920s (from 13.1 deaths per 100,000 population in 1918 to 16.2 in 1920, returning to 12.8 in 1922), before increasing to a peak of 17.8 in 1930. If not, help them find a mental health professional and make an appointment or take them to a walk-in clinic at a psychiatric hospital or a hospital emergency room. Offer to go to the appointment with the person. If so, encourage them to contact the treating physician immediately. Ask if the person is seeing a doctor or taking medication.These questions will not push the person toward suicide if they weren’t considering it.
